Számos hazai és nemzetközi kutatás készült, amely az egyetemisták rizikómagatartását vizsgálja és kiemelt figyel- met fordít erre a populációra, azonban kevés olyan kutatás található a szakirodalomban, amely az egyetemisták rizikómagatartását a nem egyetemista populációval veti össze. Hogy az egyetemisták érintettebbek-e az ugyanolyan életkorú nem egyetemista populációhoz képest alkohol- és drogfogyasztás szempontjából, megoszlanak az álláspontok a szakirodalom szerint (Bennett–Holloway 2014). Egyesült Királyságban készült kutatás szerint bizonyos szerekben nincs különbség e két populáció között, bizonyos szerekben pedig jelentősebb eltérés tapasztalható (Bennett–Holloway 2014; Schulenberg et al. 2020). Abban azonban egységes álláspont figyelhető meg a szakértők körében, hogy a szélsőséges alkoholfogyasztás vagy a droghasználat sokkal gyakoribb késő serdülőkorban és fiatal felnőttkorban, mint az életút későbbi szakaszaiban (Kuntsche–Gmel 2013; van den Bos–Blaauw–Bieleman 2022), és az egyetemista populáció körében az egyik leggyakoribb egészségügyi probléma a drogfogyasztás (Schulenberg et al. 2017; Welsh–Shentu–Sarvey 2019). The region is experiencing a sharp crisis: economies are slowing dramatically as Russian gas and energy supplies are being scaled down or cut altogether, while inflation is rising. Yet, most societies in the region are standing firm to confront aggression and its economic consequences, and all societies are rallying to welcome and support refugees from Ukraine – a sharp contrast to their rejection of refugees from the Middle East just a few years ago. We clearly need more research to understand what drives these societies. The region’s perplexing response to the COVID pandemic – an initial good performance that later reversed dramatically – provides some answers. Part of it is the tragic footprint left upon the region by the 20th century, particularly by World War 2 – a series of historical events which prompted historian Timothy Snyder to call the region the “Bloodlands”. Here, the fabric of society was torn asunder by, in turn, communist terror, the Holodomor, Nazi mass murder, and the Holocaust. After the war, systemic efforts to destroy what remained of civil society behind the Iron Curtain atomised societies and deepened distrust in government and between individuals. Social forces rooted in history played a pivotal role in COVID-19 responses. However, the lessons identified from these responses are not only relevant for this specific epidemic. We need to better understand the root causes of the region’s “trust deficit” and develop strategies to reduce it. This book is the result of a joint workshop that we organised in March 2022 for researchers from Corvinus University, Budapest, and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). This volume contains many of the papers presented and discussed at that workshop. I hope and trust that the work presented here will not only help improve the region’s pandemic preparedness, but will also further discussions on how to start dealing with the region’s notorious trust deficit. The topics reflect the expertise of the professors and the interests of the students, and the case studies were all processed along the similar principles and methodology, to ease the analytical comparison and formulation of useful and fruitful conclusions. Comparative analysis of territorial planning systems of China, Indonesia and Vietnam is discussed firstly that is followed by evaluations of two aspects of gentrification in Azerbaijan, China, Estonia, Georgia, Nigeria, Mongolia, and Turkey. The next two chapters focus more on economic angles: scrutiny of labour mobility is detailed in Africa and Asia whereas various features of the Brazilian economy are detailed next. The authors’ purpose was to go beyond the events and write a book on the history of cultures and civilisations that also elucidates the background of contemporary events which might sometimes be difficult to grasp. The importance of this endeavour lies in that it comprises in one volume all the significant civilisations still existing in our days. At the same time, the aim was to present regions, rather than modern-day countries in a complex way. It is true even if today three of these civilisations occupy a country each (China, Japan and India). On the other hand, the three monotheistic religions which evolved in the Middle East (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) influenced the civilisations of two regions, i.e. the Middle East and Europe to such an extent that it necessitated an approach via these religions. Although each civilisation is presented according to uniform principles, certain differences due to the specific characteristics of the topics and the approaches of the authors occur. Where relevant, each region is introduced by its geographical and climatic features, followed by the emergence and development of social, cultural and religious characteristics described within the given historical context. This, although briefly, may include the description of major literary, artistic trends, and e.g. religious law (in the Islamic world, for example, law permeates every aspect of social and political life). In addition, the geopolitical significance of the specific region or civilisation is also presented in each chapter. The illustrations, maps and chronological tables, as well as the glossary form an integral part of the chapters and the whole book. A short bibliography accompanies every chapter. The book authored by subject specialists from the Corvinus University of Budapest and other universities and research centres is primarily aimed at students of international relations; researchers and members of the general public, however, may also find some areas of the topics stimulating.
